Bakgrunn

Rafi Ahmad has recently moved from industry to take an Associate Professor position with Hedmark University of Applied Science. His educational background includes a Bachelor degree in Pharmaceutical Science from Jamia Hamdard, Delhi, Master of Science in Bioinformatics from University of Exeter, UK and a PhD in Bioinformatics from University of Tromsø. During his postdoc he was responsible for the Drug Discovery (DD) service package at the Norwegian Structural Biology Centre, Tromsø and provided project support in DD to Norwegian academic and industrial groups. Part of his postdoc he spent 6 months with Prof. Gerhard Klebe (Univ. of Marburg, Germany), who is one of the top researcher in the world in the field of in silico DD.

           Rafi has 5+ years of industrial DD experience working with Big Pharma including AstraZeneca and Medivir. He has lead real-time projects including antibiotic resistance in industry and has been involved with both the design of biological screening cascades as well as proposed chemistry.  He has extensive experience both with analyis of big data from next generation sequencing tchniques including whole genome sequencing, transcriptomics and RRBS. He also has expertise in structure- and ligand-based in silico DD methods and has worked with a number of protein targets common to DD including metallo-proteins, proteases and kinases.

           Rafi has collaborated with researches from both academia and industry from around the world. He recently signed an NDA and MoU with Prof. Kjetil Tasken, Biotechnology Centre, University of Oslo and Nor-OpenScreen (the Norwegian node of the EU-Openscreen infrastructure project) to provide in silico and medicinal chemistry support to the various DD projects.

Rafi is part of a number of local and national Norwegian research grants. Rafi is the project leader for a NFR project on novel diagnostics for antibiotic resistance and recently received a 13 MNOK grant (where he is WP leader) in collaboration with biotech companies in Hedmark and a Project Establishment Support from NFR/HUAC for an EU H2020 application.
